Introduction to Trail Work and Volunteering with the Long Path as part of the NYNJTC

This will be an introduction to the tools, techniques, and planning involved in planning, building, and maintaining trails. There will be a hands-on introduction to a range of tools used on the trail, including consideration of their best uses and alternatives for different trail needs.  Additional topics will include:

1) Basic Wilderness First Aid Relevant for the Most Common Trail Injuries

2) Basic Invasive Species Identification and Management

3) Prevention and Management of Ticks. and other Hazards

4) Administrative and Permission Processes with the Trail Conference, NYS Parks and Recreation, DEC, and Private Landowners.

We will then head up the trail for some hands-on work and discussion with a re-route that is in process near the border of Partridge Run.

Time and Meeting Place:  9:00 at the Berne Town Park on Rt. 443 just south of the village of Berne.  Google Maps Link

We will then car pool 5 miles to Giffords Hollow, the end of section 33.  There is only room there for about 2 to 3 cars. The seminar will be held at the Lean-to, a short distance from the cars.  Be prepared for possible cool or damp conditions. In case of light rain, we will hold the seminar at the Town of Berne Park, where there are more protected conditions.

The hike will be about 3 miles and 300 ft of elevation gain round trip.  There will be muddy sections.

No experience is required, but more experienced people who are interested in volunteering with the trail are welcome.  Your experience will add to the day.

What to Bring:  Light Day Pack, Rain Gear, Lunch, Water, Gloves, and Any of Your Favorite Trail Tools.  Saws should have a scabbard or could be folded.

We will end around 3:00.  If the morning is more riany, we will hold the seminar at the Berne Town Park Pavilion, our meeting place, which is more sheltered.  We will still proceed to the trail following this discussion, as long as the weather permits
